romcom research- 10 things i hate about you

10 Things I Hate About You Poster10 things i hate about you openings with the soundtrack, introduction of character and introduction of setting.
title are shown over the image and are done in a handwriting type font this is because the film is targeted for a teenage audience.

This film is also very simlar to how we want to open ours as it doesnt have any dialogue in the first 2 minutes and all that is shown to begin with are characters and setting with soundtrack over the top. The film also starts by setting the scene showing images of the city  first which is how we are opening ours.

They also use a very upbeat energetic song  as a representation of youth, which is the same effect we are trying to create and use.

Romcom research- four weddings and a funeral

Four Weddings and a Funeral PosterFour weddings and a funeral starts off with the opening credits, we get a shot of each individual character to get a idea of what they are like. The  opening few minute show the setting of the film and make London look like a bright, sunny and posh place. They had variation of camera angles but because the film aws done in the 90's it looks quite dated.
In the films they music doesnt fade in untill after the first 2 minutes.

The opening of this film is reasonably similar to how we would like to open ours, starting off with and itroduction to the characters and setting.

Bafta nominations

Outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer:
Attack The Block - Joe Cornish (director/writer)
Black Pond - Will Sharpe (director/writer), Tom Kingsley (director), Sarah Brocklehurst (producer)
Coriolanus - Ralph Fiennes (director)
Submarine - Richard Ayoade (director/writer)
Tyrannosaur - Paddy Considine (director), Diarmid Scrimshaw (producer)

The bafta awards are purely for British films. It is an annual award.

Submarine is a film that is quite similar to the film that we would want to make. this shows that this style of film has a good response.

'Unlike so many other British TV comedians who have made the transition to film directing, Richard Ayoade reveals a distinctive cinematic talent with his debut, the skewed teen romance Submarine. By Isabel Stevens'

More research on british romcoms - Bridget Jones diary opening few minutes

Bridget Jones's Diary Poster

Taglines:For anyone who's ever been set up, stood up or felt up

Bridget Jones is a british romcom. The opening few scenes are of a woman who is going to her mum christmas party. For the first few minutes there are no title just an intro to the film. Bridget Jones stars Renne Zellweger, Hugh Grant and Colin Firth and was directed by Sharon Maguire.

the dialogue to begin with is a voice over of her explaining what she wants to achieve throughout year, and as the whole film is set on a year of her life it introduces possible ideas of what could happen.

The opening is similar to what we want as it introduces the character and setting first, just like the majority of romcoms do. In this film the soundtrack doesnt start straight away because of the voice over.

They use various effects in the opening two minutes such as a slow motion when Mark turns round , however this is done in a mickey take way of a conventional romance which have become know of having the perfect person seen in slow  motion through the eyes of the antagonist of the film. Also they have used shots like have the camera on a angle as she walks into her mothers house this is ment to give the sense that her mother is querky and not from this planet.

Location shots research.

We are going to film our opening 2 minutes in hastings which we know very well.
we are going to film in
- Hastings old town
- Hastings town centre
-East hill

We knew we wanted a shot of the whole town anddecided that the best place to get this would be from the top of the east hill as it is the highest point in Hastings and we would able to get the shot we want from there.

Also we want our film to have a very busy feel to  it so we decided to film it in the old town where there is always quite a few people , and because there are lots of shops and cafes it creates quite close community feel to it.

The only real problems are that because we are filming it all outside it all depends on the weather as to when we film and that because we are filming it in public we have to be careful on not getting to many background people in the video as it would put the continuity off.

Final production company logo

This is the final logo for our production company ' fly productions' we wanted to go with something fairly simplistic  as alot of logos are done simply so that they catch the eye and make an audience interested in whats going on.

Connotation of fly
-'Cool'
-Slang
-modern
-youth
-impossible

We used this logo specifically as we are trying to target a female audience, as the films produced by 'fly productions' are all genres which are generally viewed more by females then males.
Generally films such as Romcoms an chickflicks.
