The editing software we used was sony vegas. it was a very simple software once you had gotten used to it. however because our computers are very old we only have 2 computers in the college which have enough memory to run sony vegas without freezing and messing up. this made it hard as we were editing in a pair but we could only use the computer a specific times. Song vegas had tutorials to show how to edit so it made it much easier.

All of Evaluation
All 7 questions of my evaluation are done on a prezi presentation however i had alot of problems with the internet connection and the uploading of photos onto prezi so i dont have all the photos i would have like to of had.
Audience feedback.
Just like we hoped the females who watched our film were much more interested in our film than the boys. One of the boys said it could be alright but not really their type of thing but the rest of them said it looked quite girly and not really their kind of thing. We gave the audience a bried overview of what the rest of the film would be about, and when we asked them what t hey thought the genre was 7/9 guessed it was a romcom, this was good as it means we used the usual romcom conventions correctly to present our film. This particular audience was only 16-17 year olds so this group was the right age for the film.
-
'The scenery shot really sets the scene'
'When holly walked into the lampost , it was so funny'
' umm.. i dont really understand why shes running after him.'
'the shots flow really nicely together'
'the opening is funny and i like how you make hastings look;
'not really my kind of film'
We got some positive and negative feedback from this age group but we got the positive feedback from the members of the audience who it was more aimed at.
When getting audience feedback we did a oral discussion and just took down key things they said about our film.
I also showed this film to my an older woman and and older male both of who are late 40's , they both said that it didnt look like their kind of thing and didnt appeal to them.
I showed a young female of 21 the opening aswell and she thought it looked very funny and interesting.
This shows that as we thought it would our film appeals more to a young femal audience than any other.

Music openings of Romcoms
A Cinderella story-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bo0fpyQPlAU
The music for the opening of A Cinderella story is a very soft sounding instrumental piece of music. This is to create the impression on a fairy tale type atmosphere which fits into the narrative of the film.
Music and Lyrics-
Music and lyrics opens with a cheesy 80's pop song. This creates a lively energetic atmosphere and clearly show that the film has some relation to the 80's. It works well for the opening of this film as it sets up the audience for the cheesy feel of a typical romcom.

The camera we used
We filmed our film on a Panasonic HD 14mb Camera. It was a very simple camera a took still shots aswell which was good for the storyboard. We took a tripod along with us when we filmed and attached our own wheels to it but then decided to do most of our shots handheld.
Our final titles
When editing our film we decided that the way we had set our some of the titles didn't fit as well into the shots as we had hoped. In the end our final title sequence went...
T1- The fly production logo
T2-Rachel Howe
T3- and
T4- Natasha Kingscote
T5- A Halt film
T6-Music by reality check
T7- Costume by Natasha Kingscote
T8 Introducing
T9- Russell Stocker
T10- and Rachel Howe
T11- That should be me
We used a variety of colours and font to create the youthful fun type feel to film with bouncing letters to give the energetic impression to go along with the music.

Our own distributor
When editing our film we felt that that our titles where a little bit empty so we came up with a name for a distributor. We wanted something short and memorable so we came up with the name ...
Halt Films
... as it is only two short words so its catchy.

Who would distrubute our film...
http://www.myentertainmentworld.com/1esource/ProductionCompanies.html
This site has a long list of production companies who produce all kinds of films
To get the idea of who would distribute our film i looked at who had disributed various romcoms-
Bridget jones -

However as it is a low budget independant film the likely distributers for us would be...
Entertainment film - http://www.entertainmentfilms.co.uk/
As they distribute all types of british independant films.
Left films - http://www.leftfilms.com/
Left films would be a possiblility as is specialises in new genres of film. Although our film isnt a new genre and fits into the romcom conventions this company would possibly distribute it as it has a origionality and is creative.

Our music
For our opening we want to represent a busy town lifestyle so we want music which is energetic, lively and fun. However we are also trying to represent youth so as well as he music being energetic and lively we want a modern song. As our film is based in Hastings and we are using Hastings actors we thought that it would be good to use a local Hastings band to make the film as real as possible.
We chose In flames by Reality Check as it fits into everything thing we want.

Editing
Th editing of our film has so far been successful. Rachel and I have been editing together in our free periods and lunchtimes. We decided to edit the whole thing together so that we can both use our interpretations and mix them together to create something new and creative. Also by working together we know that we are splitting the editing evenly. However for the past few weeks we have been unable to do any editing as for an unknown reason we could not get our videos to come up on the computer and editing software. Eventually we managed to get a technician and our problem is resolved so we can carry on and have the whole film completed for the 13th of march as our release date was the 15th.
Sound we will be using
The only sound we will be using in our film is non diegetic sound. We will have a song playing for the whole first two minutes and we will use a sound bridge so that the song helps the scenes flow nicely together.
Our film name
'That should be me'
Rachel and i came to a joint conclusion for our film title. We wanted something quite short and snappy yet gives a good insight to the film. The title is suppose to be the thought of the main female character Holly as teh film is about a boy she likes who has a really horrible girlfriend.
We looked at other romcom names such as
- four weddings and a funeral
-10 things i hate about you
-Bridget Jones
- A Cinderella story
- when Harry met Sally
- Notting hill
-Pretty woman
All of which were reasonably short. We didn't want a long title as we want it to be easily remembered and catchy.

Our film relating to Propps theory
The hero - Robert
The villain- Amiellia - roberts girlfriend
The doner-Hollys mother ( minor character)
The dispatcher- Friend of robert (minor character)
The false hero- friend of robert ( minor charcter)
The helper- friend of holly (minor character)
The princess- Holly
The father- Hollys father ( minor character)
This shows that our romcom fits into a convention film theory

Advertising our film
I always see Films advertised either on the TV, on the side of the screen on certain websites, Poster on buses/ phone boxes/ outside the cinema. This is not just specifically apply Romcom films but all films in general
I think the best way to advertise a film like ours (lowbudget/independant) would be to make a poster and put it in various places. Also a good way would be make a trailer and upload it to video websites such as youtube. An easy way to hear about a new film is by word of mouth so if we put and advertisment on social networks such as facebook/ twitter/ myspace then people would hear about it and spread the word as social networks are a great way to hear about new things. Other ways could be to advertise in our sixth forms page of the local newspaper.
Uploading a trailer , using social networks and the local paper are all easy and cheap ways to advertise so i think they would be our best option.

Shots being used in our film.
- to introduce the two main characters we use a series of tracking shots, panning shots and mid shots, to give the audeince the impression of closeness and that they are following along with the character. We also use a handheld effect when doing the tracking shots to also try n make the audience feel as if they re part of the filmwe also use some close up and still mid shots. Some of the shots will be over the shoulder and some will be head on. I think this will set up the narrative for our film well as it sets the scene and introduces the main characters. It also sets up good enigmas as the aim is to entice the audience so that they want see more and because at the end of the opening Holly never catches up with Robert we want the audience to want to know what would of happened if she did catch him also creating a mystery type feel to it.
(roughly)
S1- A panning shot of hastings from the top of the east hill
S2- A panning shot of the seafront and pier
S3- LS of Pier from the front
S4- LS of white rock theatre
S5- LS of Hastings shopping centre
S6- LS of 1066 tunnel
S7- MS robert walking down stairs from front
S8- MS robert walking down stair behind
S9- MS pann roberts going around the corner
S10- LS Robert coming out of alley into highstreet panning at the end
S11- MS tracking shot of robert
S12- LS Robert walking past holly
S13- MS holly looking up
S14- Pann after her as she runs behing him
S15- MS tracking shot of her running after him
S16- MS of robert with holly in background head on, trackign
S17- LS Them going round the corner from behing
S18- LS them coming round the corner from the other side ,she runs into lampost
S19- Crane shot of Holly on the floor
S20- XCU Holly face on floor .
We use a variety of shots but wanted to keep the film reasonable simple to keep the feeling of a small town type place. Yet as the tracking and panning shots are quite busy it keep up the youthful energetic atmosphere.

Titles for our film
Rachel and i sat down and discussed what we think should go where in our title sequence. This is the conclusion we came to.

Prelim video
Our preliminary was filmed in october in a cafe in hastings. We could only film during the quiet business hours so thats why there are some mistakes about the lighting.
We tried to use many different shots to experiment what would work well for when we would film our opening. we used simple cuts to trimmed some to shots so that we wouyld only be using relevent parts.
There are a few continuity errors such as when rachel isnt in her chair and when i am suddenly at the back of the cafe but these are things that we have taken notice of for when we will be filming.
In the prelim- Natasha Kingscote, Rachel Howe, Jonny Cloake, Jonathan Sollo

Film classification according to the BBFC
These classifications are according to the british board of film classification
It is impossible to predict what might upset any particular child. But a ‘U’ film should be suitable for audiences aged four years and over. ‘U’ films should be set within a positive moral framework and should offer reassuring counterbalances to any violence, threat or horror.
If a work is particularly suitable for a pre-school child to view alone, this will be indicated in the Consumer Advice.
If a work is particularly suitable for a pre-school child to view alone, this will be indicated in the Consumer Advice.
Parental Guidance
General viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children.
Unaccompanied children of any age may watch. A ‘PG’ film should not disturb a child aged around eight or older. However, parents are advised to consider whether the content may upset younger or more sensitive children.

Suitable for 12 years and over
Exactly the same criteria are used to classify works at ‘12A’ and ‘12’. These categories are awarded where the material is suitable, in general, only for those aged 12 and over. Works classified at these categories may upset children under 12 or contain material which many parents will find unsuitable for them.
The ‘12A’ category exists only for cinema films. No one younger than 12 may see a ‘12A’ film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult, and films classified ‘12A’ are not recommended for a child below 12. An adult may take a younger child if, in their judgement, the film is suitable for that particular child. In such circumstances, responsibility for allowing a child under 12 to view lies with the accompanying adult.
The ‘12’ category exists only for video works. No one younger than 12 may rent or buy a ‘12’ rated video work.

Suitable only for adults
No-one younger than 18 may see an ‘18’ film in a cinema. No-one younger than 18 may rent or buy an ‘18’ rated video work.
To be shown only in specially licensed cinemas, or supplied only in licensed sex shops, and to adults of not less than 18 years.
The ‘R18’ category is a special and legally restricted classification primarily for explicit works of consenting sex or strong fetish material involving adults. Films may only be shown to adults in specially licensed cinemas, and video works may be supplied to adults only in licensed sex shops. ‘R18’ videos may not be supplied by mail order.
This means that according to the BBFC our film would be classed as a 12A because our film would contain some sexual content and some strong language.
Our actors - costume - make up - props - set
For our film opening we only need two actors to play the main characters.
Robert was played by Russle Stocker and Holly was played by Rachel Howe.
We used these two actors as we wanted to present the typical Hastings type teenager.
We wanted to use two actors from hastings to make it feel more real.
We wanted two teenagers of medium stature and who are both attractive people with the girl being slightly shorter than the boy. We wanted our actors like this because that is the norm for a typical romcom and we wanted to stay reasonably close the coventional romcom style film. We also wanted two actors with acting experiance so they will feel comfortable being filmed and wont look awkward on screen.
For make up we only wanted natural make up to again give the impression of a average teenager type. The costume choice was also because we wanted to give the impression of a normal teenager so we went for jeans and coats, plain reasonably dark colours for both of the main characters.
We didnt use any props other than a phone that the main female Holly was holding at one point.
our film was filmed outside in Hastings old town as we wanted the real feel of town lifestyle, this made it quite difficult as people ket walking past but we think it created a nice atmosphere for the film.

research on titles- Juno
http://www.artofthetitle.com/2008/04/15/juno/
Juno - Romcom
The titles for juno start of was naturalistic images then at 15 second turn into cartoon. This is not the same style how we would like to do our but the way that the title are imposed over the moving image is the smae type of things we plan to do.
the titles start with the name of the names of the various production companies and then leads onto the actors name. The music for the titles doesnt kick in straight away as there is a short amout of dialogue in the film first.
Our film is also going to start with the titles first and then the actors as i think that the production companies need the main credit towards the film , then as the actors come up introduce the actors as although the actors are important i dont think they are as important as the production companies. In juno it isnt untill1.18 when the other people such as casting, costume, music,co producers, editors, script writers and the directors is introduced. The whole title seconds only lasts about 2 minutes 30 seconds so it will be 30 seconds longer than ours. this is why we are not going to mention people such as editors , script writers etc as too many credits put into a small amout of time will look too busy and messy and wont create the same feel that we want.
Also our film is going to start of with the music and dialogue as the firts minute is of film is setting the scene of hastings so we want to set the secene of the film at the very beginning.
The font of the titles for this film are big blold capitals in bright colours this works for the cartoon image like effect but as our is more naturalistic we want more simplistic font like a bold black.

Research on titles - Legally blonde
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUbD-rHSQHs
The title for legally blonde are done in quite a similar way to how we would like our titles to look. Legally blonde is also a chick flick so we know that the style of titles works with the genre as it has been used before. The titles are superimposed over the moving images of girls getting ready and doing their everyday things. It is similar to how we would like to start ours in the sense that the opening of the film goes straight into the titles and song. The titles are done in a handwritten style but because they are pink and done very girly with things like hearts above the I's it looks very much like it is targeted more towards woman. The titles in pink works well as the opening is very bright sunlight and pink is a recurring color in things like the girls clothes and nail varnish.
The title starts with the production company and then ' a Marc Platt production' before the main title of the film which comes up within the first 15 seconds of the film. It is then followed by a long list of actors coming up with a few second intervals between each name. This works well with this film as it gave time to set the scene of the girls getting ready and giving the impression of the stereotyped blonde girl which the rest of the film is based around.
These titles work well for this film but would defiantly not work for any other genre than romcom chickflicks as they are very light hearted and girly.

Research on titles - sherlock holmes
http://www.artofthetitle.com/2010/01/21/sherlock-holmes/
The titles for sherlock holmes are done coming up in a font that is in the style of old fashioned hand writing. whenever there is a specific title the image freezed and the writing comes up as the frozen image turns into an old fashion style of a drawing. I really like this use of title as it flows very smoothly and doesnt go on for too long. However i dont think this style of title would work well for a modern romcom as it looks very old fashioned and serious and creates more of an adventure atmosphere other than a light hearted one that we would want. Also these titles do not come straight away into the film there are a few scenes that are not too long first to set the scene of the film and gain audience attention.
The titles start of with introducing people who went into making the film such as producers/director/editor etc. it isnt until 1 minute into the titles that the main actor is introduced. The title of the film them appears at 1.5 which is followed by the co actors names. The reasoning for having the main actors name first would have been for publicity for the actor.
The sequence and look of the titles works well for this style of mystery/detective type film as it all gives a very busy, fast paced impression which fits with the genre.
The reason i chose to look at Sherlock holmes for titles is because the film is targeted for a slightly younger age and we are targeting our film for a younger age.

A film as high budget as Sherlock Holmes has many people who need to be credited in the titles. It has 28 different titles within 3 minutes ours as a low budget independant film will only have approximatly 10 titles.
Also these titles do not come straight away into the film there are a few scenes that are not too long first to set the scene of the film and gain audience attention.

romcom research- 10 things i hate about you
10 things i hate about you openings with the soundtrack, introduction of character and introduction of setting. title are shown over the image and are done in a handwriting type font this is because the film is targeted for a teenage audience.
This film is also very simlar to how we want to open ours as it doesnt have any dialogue in the first 2 minutes and all that is shown to begin with are characters and setting with soundtrack over the top. The film also starts by setting the scene showing images of the city first which is how we are opening ours.
They also use a very upbeat energetic song as a representation of youth, which is the same effect we are trying to create and use.

Four weddings and a funeral starts off with the opening credits, we get a shot of each individual character to get a idea of what they are like. The opening few minute show the setting of the film and make London look like a bright, sunny and posh place. They had variation of camera angles but because the film aws done in the 90's it looks quite dated. In the films they music doesnt fade in untill after the first 2 minutes.
The opening of this film is reasonably similar to how we would like to open ours, starting off with and itroduction to the characters and setting.

More research on british romcoms - Bridget Jones diary opening few minutes

Taglines:For anyone who's ever been set up, stood up or felt up
Bridget Jones is a british romcom. The opening few scenes are of a woman who is going to her mum christmas party. For the first few minutes there are no title just an intro to the film. Bridget Jones stars Renne Zellweger, Hugh Grant and Colin Firth and was directed by Sharon Maguire.the dialogue to begin with is a voice over of her explaining what she wants to achieve throughout year, and as the whole film is set on a year of her life it introduces possible ideas of what could happen.
The opening is similar to what we want as it introduces the character and setting first, just like the majority of romcoms do. In this film the soundtrack doesnt start straight away because of the voice over.
They use various effects in the opening two minutes such as a slow motion when Mark turns round , however this is done in a mickey take way of a conventional romance which have become know of having the perfect person seen in slow motion through the eyes of the antagonist of the film. Also they have used shots like have the camera on a angle as she walks into her mothers house this is ment to give the sense that her mother is querky and not from this planet.

Location shots research.
We are going to film our opening 2 minutes in hastings which we know very well.
we are going to film in
- Hastings old town
- Hastings town centre
-East hill
We knew we wanted a shot of the whole town anddecided that the best place to get this would be from the top of the east hill as it is the highest point in Hastings and we would able to get the shot we want from there.
Also we want our film to have a very busy feel to it so we decided to film it in the old town where there is always quite a few people , and because there are lots of shops and cafes it creates quite close community feel to it.
The only real problems are that because we are filming it all outside it all depends on the weather as to when we film and that because we are filming it in public we have to be careful on not getting to many background people in the video as it would put the continuity off.

Final production company logo
This is the final logo for our production company ' fly productions' we wanted to go with something fairly simplistic as alot of logos are done simply so that they catch the eye and make an audience interested in whats going on.
Connotation of fly
-'Cool'
-Slang
-modern
-youth
-impossible
We used this logo specifically as we are trying to target a female audience, as the films produced by 'fly productions' are all genres which are generally viewed more by females then males.
Generally films such as Romcoms an chickflicks.
